Schatz, Garner Earn Knoxville Nationals Pages

McKENZIE, Tenn. (August 16, 2017) – One has a storied past at the legendary Knoxville (IA) Raceway, the other a love-hate relationship with the fabled half-mile. When the checkered flag dropped on the 360 and 410 fields on Aug. 5 and Aug. 12, Clint Garner and Donny Schatz shared one thing in common – their names were now in the history books as Knoxville Nationals champions.
Garner had won many races at Knoxville Raceway, but the 360 Knoxville Nationals title had eluded him to this point in his career. Taking the lead on the opening lap of the 25-lap A-main, Garner hit lapped traffic by lap 10. The final caution flag flew on lap 13, in which Garner was able to hold off a challenge at the restart and extend his lead. The victory was Garner’s 33rd triumph at Knoxville Raceway, putting him second on the all-time 360ci Sprint Car win list at the Iowa track.
Schatz’s victory was his 10th career Knoxville Nationals triumph, giving him a perfect 10. The North Dakota native stayed close to early leader, David Gravel, keeping him within reach as the duo battled through early traffic. Gravel’s engine expired on lap 22, with Schatz inheriting the lead. Battling through traffic and fending off challenges from Kyle Larson, Kerry Madsen and Brian Brown, Schatz pulled away from Larson following a final lap charge to cross the line solidly in front to earn his 10th Knoxville Nationals title.
In addition to sweeping the 2017 Knoxville Nationals, J&J Auto Racing teams continued to set a blistering pace of victories in late July and through the mid-part of August. Scoring 21 (total of 23) other wins in just over two weeks, J&J Auto Racing drivers and teams earned triumphs in 305ci, 360ci and 410ci sprint car racing divisions across the east coast, upper Midwest, south central region, Midwest and southern regions.
