Ginneken Wins WA Sprintcar Championship Event
McKENZIE, Tenn. (Dec. 15, 2016) – Tim Van Ginneken made it look easy, but the sweeping victory in the Western Australia (WA) Sprintcar Championship at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday, Dec. 10, was anything but. The Victoria, Australia, driver started from the pole for the 30-lap feature event but he had to earn the win the hard way after an early penalty saw him relegated to third. The fault was only to prove to be a minor penalty, as Van Ginneken marched forward to retake the lead and capture the championship race title he’d captured a year before for McKenzie, Tenn., based manufacturer, J&J Auto Racing.
The event was part of the Salute the General event, which paid tribute to WA speedway legend, John ‘The General’ Day, who put the bright orange push utes that are highly recognized in the west. Day had passed away a day earlier. Van Ginneken also battled a stout field that included both American and Australian drivers to claim the win.
